Since 2006, Our Lady of the Road in South Bend, Indiana has been accompanying people living on the streets through a weekend day-time Drop-in Center that provides free breakfast, laundry, showers, and a place for people to belong. In the summer of 2020, amid the COVID-19 pandemic, over 80 people were living in a tent encampment in downtown South Bend without access to bathrooms or alternative housing options. In response to this public health and housing crisis, Our Lady of the Road began Motels4Now (M4N).
M4N quickly transformed motel rooms into low-barrier housing for people experiencing homelessness, in South Bend, becoming the city’s first low-barrier intake center. An intake center meets people where they are in the form of housing and community services without first needing to achieve sobriety.
In the summer of 2022, our Foundation was able to present a check for $2,200 to Our Lady of the Road for the Motels4Now program. With this grant award, we are overjoyed to be able to help with this ministry. We are called by God to help those who are in need and help give hope to the hopeless. Our Lady of the Road is such a blessing, and we wish them great success in their Motels4Now program.
