Dr. Mike Mastrangelo and his wife, Grace (who passed away in 2012), have been providing scholarships for Dwenger students since 1993. Over 30 students have received a scholarship for each of the four years they attended Bishop Dwenger High School. Their generosity to scholarships was also equaled by their support of Saints Alive!, capital improvement projects, and extensive volunteer work. Dr. Mike was a kind and generous man who loved his faith and was committed to our community, especially to Catholic education.
He maintained a spreadsheet of the scholarship recipients and he always wanted to know how they were faring. Dr. Mike wanted to know if they continued their education, what jobs they had, whether they married and if they had children. If he heard news about them from the Dwenger Times, the newspapers, or friends, he would update his spreadsheet with that information. In recent years, he would come to the Development Office so he could personally meet the recipients for lunch. He was so happy, and honored, to be able to help our “Saints.” His impact to our school is as legendary as his impact to the Fort Wayne community. If you were lucky enough to know him, you understand that we have lost a special “Saint.” Dr. Mike’s commitment to BDHS will continue through his gift to the Catholic Community Foundation of Northeast Indiana. His generosity, and advanced planning, will ensure this important scholarship will continue in perpetuity. For that, and for him, we are forever grateful.
